When singing strengthens the capacity to aspire: girls’ reflexivity in rural Bangladesh

In the present paper, we explore impact of singing for girls in rural Bangladesh. Previous findings this field-based interview study (with 18 girls) have demonstrated that can act as a driving force young girls’ psychological individuation processes, implying increased agency and autonomy. A critical question, however, is to what extent village will manage maintain feeling they pass through puberty. How do navigate between their own wish continue pressure from cultural norms (such getting married)? Using Margareth Archer’s morphogenetic approach Arjun Appadurai’s culture capacity analytical tools, connect different modes reflexivity aspire. We discuss specific mechanisms emerge relevant girls/young women way Bengali society.
